Abstract
The innovative 3-Routes Platform is based on the integration of a thermal pre-treatment method capable of significantly increasing the fraction of fermentable organic carbon from food waste in order to furthermore change the status of the feedstock to become more suitable a) for production of higher added value products as short-medium chain fatty acids, and b) for production of bio-methane and hygienized digestate. The liquid fraction, rich of solubilized organics due to thermal pretreatment, will be fermented into marketable fatty acids as short-chain-carboxylates e.g. acetic acid, butyric acid, propionic acid, having high market price and high potential to be biologically upgraded. The separated solid fraction composed by a "loose" lignocellulosic matrix will be transferred to anaerobic digestion to maximize bio-methane yields. The biogas produced can be used for generating heat and electricity or upgraded into biomethane, distributed at dedicated stations and useful as biofuel for powering means of transport. This biofuel would replace natural gas, and, therefore, allow a reduction of Green House Gas emissions and the import of fossil fuels from abroad.
