Abstract

The project is focused on the test of a static Fourier transform spectrometer (S-FTS) with an extremely high signal/noise ratio and throughput. The goal is to demonstrate the applicability of this paradigm in a real case, outside of the controlled laboratory environment. S-FTS are traditionally based on the use of reflective diffraction gratings: those optical devices (gratings) are source of noise due to the contribution of the diffused light generated by each groove. S-FTS are extremely sensible to this noise source. We propose the substitution of the gratings with prisms.
Prisms are optical element than can be fabricated with an extremely high optical quality, and the diffuse light that is introduced is extremely low. Moreover, inter-reflections, being mirror-like components, can be studied by raytracing and their effects can be avoided by an appropriate optical layout.
The roadmap foresees a first flight with a breadboard model version of the instrument and after a critical analysis of the acquired data, successive flights with more compact and monolithic designs.
