Abstract
The Communication of the Commission to the European Parliament, the EU Council, the European economic and social Committee and the Committee of the Regions "20 20 by 2020: Europe's climate change opportunity" provides a thought dedicated to our future: "The Europe of 2050 will look very different. Nowhere will this be more obvious than in the way we supply our energy needs, and the respect we show to the world around us". In recent years, in the face of pressing economic and environmental challenges, national and international efforts to promote sustainable growth were strongly intensified. For instance, by coupling research and innovation, the program Horizon 2020 is helping to achieve this objective with emphasis on excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling societal challenges.
By focusing on Italy, recently the national energy balance has confirmed that the building sector requires around 35% of the overall energy demand, and thus it can be an important lever for accelerating the sustainable development through the minimization of natural resources use, by paying attention, at the same time, at the improvement of living standards in terms of global comfort and struct
