Abstract
Among the major causes of salinization in urban and rural areas are dust supression practices and de-icing practices of roads with chloride salts. In this study we will attempt to simulate the conditions of secondary soil salinization for one of the most popular urban lawns and will assess its effects on allocation of C in plant-soil-atmosphere continuum. Realization of the experiment will provide an imporant information on how de-icing practices affect the ability of the urban lawn ecosystems to sequester C - one of the importnat ecosystem services of green infrastructures.
Goals
The primary objectives of the work are:
- growing Lolium perenne in pots with soil substrate
- watering plants with solution at different salt concentrations (0mM, 30mM, 90mM)
- pulse labelling of plants in enriched 13C atmosphere
- chasing the label in different compartment for 5 days
- sampling of aboveground biomass - once a day
- sampling of belowground biomass - onse a day
- soil sampling - once a day
- gas sampling of soil respiration and shoot respiration
- analyses of samples on C isotope composition on IRMS and CRDS
- dataset preparation
