Abstract
The Research Data Alliance (RDA) is rapidly building the social and technical bridges that enable open sharing and re-use of data on a global level. RDA/Europe - the European plug-in to the global Research Data Alliance activities - will ensure that European research, industrial, e-infrastructure and policy stakeholders are all aware of its achievements, engaged with and actively involved in the global RDA activities and will advance the use of its results. European domain scientists and data scientists are involved in and driving a series of working and interest groups, generating first results of RDA and this momentum should be maintained and even increased. A collaborative web platform, currently under strong development, is widely used by the RDA members and coordinating administration. RDA Europe will look for innovative ways of facilitating the take-up and implementation of RDA outputs in Europe, both in academia and industry, and will continue to develop and maintain the RDA web-based collaboration framework. Further steps will be taken in steering, planning and implementing the sustainability of RDA through a legal entity.
Goals
Already now we can see the effect RDA has had on improving the amount of interactions and their quality between e-Infrastructures and also the various ESFRI research infrastructures. Despite its short lifetime, RDA is becoming accepted as a global and cross-disciplinary forum to speed up decision taking towards a higher degree of interoperability at many layers. When TCP/IP was chosen in early Internet times we saw a boost in connectivity between computers. Now we expect an enormous boost in data sharing when RDA will push towards agreements on a layer of common building blocks, which can only be achieved by a guided bottom-up process.
To ensure RDA is successful, on the one hand, needs to maintain the momentum in the coming years by continuing and develop support activities, and on the other hand some action lines need to be strengthened.
The objectives, which RDA Europe aims to achieve with this proposal which would reinforce the action lines in need of greater support are as follows:
- Global Policy Engagement
- European Policy Engagement
- European Participation
- European Excellence
- Scientific Innovation
- Industry Views
- Publishing Outputs
