Abstract
The neuroinflammatory processes, occurring in aging or as a consequence of chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, promote neurochemical and hormonal changes, profoundly affecting cognitive functions (decrements in learning and memory). The recent discovery of the presence of adult neurogenesis in human dentate gyrus of the hippocampus opens very interesting challenges on the role of a virtuous lifestyle aimed to counteract or slow the decay of new neurons production in the aged brain. Diet and physical exercise in particular have become the object of intense research in relation to cognitive decline. Moreover, mounting evidence suggests a direct link between the brain and gastrointestinal function. The modulation of microbiota through administration of live bacteria (probiotics) could represent an intriguing approach for the prevention of specific diseases. Aim of this project is to study the neuroprotective and neuro-therapeutic action of probiotics in a model of neuro-inflammation in mice
