Abstract

Establishing mechanisms to control decoherence and dissipative phenomena in real materials is one of the most complex challenges of modern physics. It is not only relevant for fundamental science, but it is also a backbone for the development of novel families of quantum materials that would allow for storage and coherent transport of information, or conversions of photons into charges with unprecedented efficiency. This perspective calls for a ground-breaking effort to understand and master coherence in artificial quantum systems and to transfer the gained knowledge to solid state materials. With this proposal, we want to take a major step forward in this direction by establishing for the first time a collaborative effort between two most promising experimental platforms, namely ultracold atoms in optical lattices and heterostructures of transition-metal oxides. In both platforms, one can tailor structures of only few layers coupled by controlled tunneling. We will develop an unprecedented synergy, creating a network grounded on the world-renowned expertise of experimental and theoretical Italian groups already operating in cold atoms and non-equilibrium physics of materials.
