Abstract

We propose the development in Italy of Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KID) for space
applications. These detectors represent a breakthrough in the detection of low-energy photons
(IR to mm-waves). Future space missions devoted to the cosmology of the early universe, to molecular and plasma astrophysics
and to the observation of the earth and its atmosphere (remote sensing at mm-waves) can benefit significantly from the availability of a new-generation of ultra-sensitive detectors. Moreover, mm/sub-mm large-format cameras,
derived from the ones we propose here, are potentially useful in a range of real-life situations:
non-invasive security controls, quality control in production/packaging lines, vision through fog
in airports and more. In this proposal we
describe our plan to design, fabricate, and test in the laboratory two fully representative and
characterized KIDs array sub-modules, completed by their feedhorns, testbed cryogenic setup
and custom readout electronics. All these components will be suitable for space operation.
