The Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis (Imaa) of the National Research Council of Italy has been granted, as leader, a new contract for a duration of four years and a total cost of 1.8 million euros within the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), which is implemented by ECMWF on behalf of the European Commission. The contract was signed on 15th October with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in the framework of the collection and processing services of in situ observations with the aim to facilitate the access to and the harmonization of in situ observations from global baseline and reference networks, and comprehensive upper-air observations.
This contract represents an extension of the previous "C3S 311a Lot3: Access to Baseline and Reference Observations Networks” led by IMAA and concluded in June 2021 (https://climate.copernicus.eu/access-observations-baseline-and-reference-networks). During the first contract a large number of datasets and services were provided to the C3S “Climate Data Store” (CDS) catalogue, developed by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and representing a climate data hub in support of climate studies and monitoring. The CDS catalogue of datasets, tools and information products is available from the C3S web portal at https://climate.copernicus.eu and also accessible via an open Application Programming Interface (API).
The objective of the new contract is therefore to increase the number of datasets and of essential climatic variables (ECV) provided to the users for the study and monitoring of climate as well as to the amount of data sources for improving atmospheric reanalysis.
Dr. Fabio Madonna, Cnr principal scientist and scientific manager of the contract, will lead the activities with the support of a consolidated European partnership, consisting of: University of Wien, Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy, University Maynooth, University of Tallin and BK Scientific GmbH. In addition to the aforementioned five sub-contractors, the project will rely on the support of a team of internationally recognized experts aiming to encourage, guide and facilitate the achievement of the contractual objectives.
The contract kick-off meeting will take place on 4 November online with the participation of all the partnership and the ECMWF representatives who will monitor the contractual activities.
