Istituto per le Risorse Biologiche e le Biotecnologie Marine (IRBIM)

Research activities

The research activities of CNR IRBIM are carried out within the context of several international research projects. Among these:

WATERCARE: INTERREG ITALY-CROATIA PROJECT [1.1.2019 - 31.12.2021]
The WATERCARE project has as its main purpose the improvement of the quality of bathing water, reducing the risk of microbial contamination, through the use of innovative tools for the management and treatment of coastal waters. WATERCARE deals with: developing an innovative system for water quality WQIS (Water Quality Integrated System) based on a hydro-meteorological monitoring system in real time; create an ad-hoc system in a pilot site (i.e. Arzilla, Fano) for the management of bathing waters and improvement of their quality; develop a real-time alert system able to preventively identify the environmental risks deriving from fecal contamination of coastal waters and to support decisions and legislative processes for the management of bathing water.

B-BLUE - BUILDING THE BLUE BIOTECHNOLOGY COMMUNITY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN INTERREG MED PROJECT [01.09.2020 - 20.06.2022]
B-Blue brings together 23 partners and associated partners from 10 Mediterranean countries with the scope of involving more than 300 stakeholders of the Blue Bioeconomy into its Med Blue Biotechnology (BBt) community thanks to a dedicated digital platform and the setup of local multistakeholders laboratories in the 5 pilot areas. All along its 22 months of implementation, B-Blue will support the development of a governance framework at the Mediterranean level, aimed at overcoming the fragmentation of the biotechnology sector applied to marine resources and at facilitating the access to sustainable innovation, thanks to the collaboration between universities, research centers, local and national public authorities, SMEs and their supporting organizations. Biotechnologies represent a strategical tool for the closure of production cycles and for the valorisation of discards in products with high added value, as well as for their application to marine biotic resources. However, the potential of blue biotechnology, albeit enormous, remains largely unexpressed in both economic and innovation terms. CNR-IRBIM and the B-Blue partners therefore aim to unlock this potential by creating a community that is able to define shared strategies and synergistic activities for the transition towards sustainable and inclusive blue growth.
