Engineering, ICT and technologies for energy and transportation

Description

General objectives

In aggrement with the mission of the National Research Council, the research activities of the department are based on an interdisciplinary and holistic approach that includes the whole chain of research: from the production of new knowledge, the development of new processes and products, to the knowledge exploitation with the aim of supporting the socio-economic growth of the country. Therefore, the general objectives of the department are: i) production of new knowledge; ii) knowledge exploitation; and iii) support to the ministries and public administration.

Main collaborations

The Department has, in all its areas of activity, a dense network of scientific collaborations with companies (eg. ENI, ENEL, Telecom, Terna, Finmeccanica, Engineering, Fincantieri, General Motors, CRF, St Microelectronics, etc.) Research centers (es. Fraunhofer, Max Planck, INRIA, CEA, CNRS, ENEA, INFN, etc.) and national and international universities (nearly all principal Italian and European universities and many universities outside Europe).
It is also strategic the involvement of DIITET researchers in the european initiatives - Technology Platforms, Joint Programming Initiatives (JPI) and programs ERA-NET, the Public Private Partnership (PPP) and the Joint Technology Initiatives and large research infrastructures - to promote greater integration with the European Area of Research.

Summary of expected results

In line with the general objectives, the Department works to coordinate, monitor and evaluate the activities carried out by its Institutes aimed at producing new knowledge within the scientific macro-areas of the department (eight thematic macro-areas - Energy, Transportation, ICT, Production Systems Engineering, Sensors, New Materials, Aero-space - and a cross macro-area, Applied Mathematics, for modeling and analysis of complex systems subject of the search); enhance the knowledge produced in order to promote the socio-economic advancement of the country (through collaboration with companies, the management of the patent portfolio of the department and the creation of start-up); and support to the PA and ministries.
