Abstract
Geophysical survey delivers PD7 aims at reconstructing the natural landscape of the Caelian hill (in order to assess the strategies of urban and architectural development of the area) and provides information that links together otherwise separate districts, targeting in particular Area 5 (that connects the Lateran to the Sessorian Palace), Area 7 (to assess the original size and location of the Castra Priora and its connection with the buildings under Area 6, Scala Santa and Aurelian walls), Area 3 (to assess the relationship between the buildings and the surrounding ancient urban fabric), and Areas 1 and 6 to assess the extent, position and orientation of the Patriarchium. Geophysical survey covers an overall surface of 12.5 hectares and is carried out by three teams: one led by Salvatore Piro (CNR/ITABC-ISPC, expert on 3D high resolution GPR analysis and on geophysical survey in Rome); a second led by Stephen Kay (Archaeological Geophysicist at the British School at Rome, with outstanding expertise in non-invasive archaeological survey in Italy); a third led by Gianfranco Morelli (Geostudi Astier, with expertise on GPR Imaging with Multi-channel Radar Systems).
Obiettivi
The choice of the methods of investigations will vary according to the specific nature of the area investigated and to the needs of the research for that specific area but three methods will be employed: Ground Penetrating Radar system equipped with single and multichannel antennas with different frequencies, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Resistivity surveys.
