Abstract
The use of passive de-orbiting devices (to increase drag, solar radiation pressure effects or even trigger electrodynamic/mechanical effects) is considered an option to limit orbital lifetime, in particular by missions with low masses. While this option is fully in line with mitigation requirements, its benefits for the resident space object environment in low-Earth orbits (LEO) still need to be demonstrated before this technology can be widely used.
