Plenary Meeting SensorART project (midterm)

15/03/2012

The consortium of SensorART (www.sensorart.eu) meets in CNR headquarters in Roma for discussing and evaluating the activities carried out during the two years of project life, under the coordination of the Institute of Clinical Physiology.
The integrated project within ICT area is a multidisciplinary research dedicated to sensorize ventricular assist devices, in order to turn mechanical pumps into “intelligent” systems for supporting heart failure patients. The consortium includes clinical partners, ICT experts, sensor experts, device developers and producers from 9 European countries.
The Pisa-Milano-Roma units of the Institute are collaborating and contributing to all the research areas.

The SensorART project intends to turn VADs from mechanical devices to intelligent systems, by endowing them with dedicated sensors. In this way, VADs could adjust to the patients’ physical needs and monitor his/her status. Most importantly, intelligent VAD systems could be used not only as a bridge to transplant, but also as destination therapy.
Abolishing cables together with telemedicine dedicated services are the main challenges of the project.
