The IPROMO (International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas) Summer School, in its 18th edition, addressed the topic of glaciers and their conservation in the current global change scenario, following the auspices of the “United Nations International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation”.
The course, organized by FAO – Mountain Partnership, University of Torino, University of Tuscia, and National Research Council of Italy, was held in the “Centro Studi Alpino” in Pieve Tesino (Trento) and in the town of Ormea (Cuneo). The 27 participants, from 19 countries, attended seminars, group activities, and debates with lecturers of international level, from academia and various institutional bodies. In addition to class activities, several fieldwork sessions have been organized with the aim of showing participants several high mountain contexts. The first one was held on the Marmolada massif (3343 m) with the analysis of the recent collapse event and the current glacier conditions. Next fieldtrips were held on the Monte Rosa massif (4634 m); participants visited “Passo dei Salati” (2936 m), where the topic of permafrost degradation was discussed, and Gabiet lake (2371), examining the impacts of climate change on cryosphere and water availability. On the following day, participants tackled the ascent to the “Sorgenti del Lys” (2417 m), inspecting the effect of global warming on alpine glaciers and deglaciated areas. The following day, they visited the Alps Museum, located in the “Forte di Bard”.
In Pieve Tesino, an outreach activity was also organized during the Summer School. A movie event showing the “Il Canto del Ghiaccio” short film, authored, among others, by Paolo Ghisu, a former IPROMO student (2015)
