IP Award 2021: a joint patent Cnr - University of Turin among the winners

In the marvellous frame of the Italian Pavilion at Expo2020 in Dubai, on February 28th  and March 1st has been held the ceremony of the “Intellectual Property Award” (IPA) 2021, a competition promoted by the Italian Patent and Trademark Office of the Ministry of Economic Development in collaboration with Netval (the Italian Network for the Valorisation of Public Research).

Among the 35 IPA 2021 finalists - 5 per each of the 7 categories - 4 patents selected for the ceremony in Dubai were proposed by Cnr, the sole Public Research Organisation attending the final stage of the competition:

-          in the Agritech and Agrofood category, Rapid purification of phycobiliproteins presented by Rosaria Lauceri (Cnr-Irsa institute in Verbania),

-          in the Green Technologies and Alternative Materials category, Zenit smart polycrystals: materials for innovative lasers presented by Jan Hostasa (Cnr-Istec institute in Faenza),

-          in the Aerospace category, Near-zero erosion, ultra high temperature ceramic composite presented by Luca Zoli (Cnr-Istec institute in Faenza),

-          in the Future Mobility category, Low-power magnetometer for improved sensors integration in future vehicles presented by Federico Maspero (associated at Cnr-Ifn institute in Milan.

The prize in the category Life Science and Health Care was awarded, as the best Italian patent, to the invention Chimeric complex and its therapeutic uses in cancer metastasis treatment, presented by Daniela Taverna, Professor at the University of Turin. The invention proposes a chimeric complex as a therapeutic treatment for malignant solid tumours, which are able to form metastasis: it has been conceived and it is currently under development in collaboration with Dr. Vittorio de Franciscis’ research group at Cnr-Ieos.

The panel of national experts, after two rounds of a scrupulous selection (79 patents submitted in this category) has awarded the prize at the joint invention UniTo – Cnr for its disruptive potential in the fight against cancer, since this chimeric complex has shown a significant ability to block the metastasis of cancer cells. University of Turin will manage the cash prize, of the amount of € 10,000 to be invested in future development of the patent.

One year after its launch, IPA2021 has come at the end, showing a great response from Universities, Public Research Organization and Research Hospitals (IRCCS) (with 38 research institutions participating and submitting 217 patents), reflecting the excellence of Italian public research and its innovation and ingenuity capability.
