Abstract
FuturEnzyme concept implies that the sustainability is facilitated by product innovation in design, functionality and quality. With water becoming an increasingly precious resource, increased environmental awareness, importance of energy conservation, the development of smart environmentally-friendly products, which certainly will include new enzymes, is an imperative. Through tackling current technological limitations, FuturEnzyme will develop and apply intelligent technologies to rapidly produce low-cost natural and engineered robust enzymes that because being "smart" by natural and artificial design will be integrated in the formulation and sustainable manufacturing of three solution-oriented groups of products: textiles, washing agents and personal/ consumer care products. These developments will be undertaken by a multidisciplinary team of 15 European academic and industrial partners. The project will address the challenges of European Green Deal and EU Bio-economy strategies, stricter regulations from authorities, changing consumer habits and preferences, and a growing level of environmental awareness.
Goals
FuturEnzyme has following objectives to develop:
(i) the most advanced innovative solutions in a fast-track to market platform to discover, design, optimise and formulate enzymes of 9 classes that meet the key performance indicators of three market sectors (detergent, textile and cosmetic manufacturing), as well as producing valuable enzymes for use as catalysts in other market sectors; (ii) four real-life and solution-oriented products enzymes; detergents; textiles; cosmetics that meeting the requirements of manufacturers, society and citizens; (iii) to establish business opportunities in four sectors [1) enzymes; 2) detergents; 3) textiles; 4) cosmetics] aimed at sustainable and inclusive economic growth in order to enhance the competitiveness, innovation capacity, and sustainability of the EU industries; (iv) o ensure the market uptake of the enzymes, processes, and products developed as well as the uptake of the high-tech enzyme development platform through outreach and events towards science, society, and policy makers, aligned with the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation, FAIR, Open Science, gender equality and ethical principles.
