Abstract

In this project we will develop techniques for controlled dissipation in the evolution of a gas of cold Rydberg atoms under coherent laser driving. These techniques will be used to study the interplay between coherent evolution and dissipation, e.g., in a setup realizing a directed percolation phase transition. In a second step, we will investigate the creation of entangled states using dissipative processes in chains of Rydberg atoms. Using a digital micro-mirror device, spatially dependent dissipation will be investigated to induce excitation transport. Approaches to introducing inhomogeneous dissipation / decoherence will be studied. These techniques will then be employed in a quantum co-processor for molecular structure calculations.
