Abstract

SusMedHouse concept is mainly driven by the aim of boosting greenhouse efficiency while preserving soil, water, and energy with novel approaches, tailored and optimized for the Mediterranean region and based on growers' needs and environmental peculiarities.
Four cultivation methods, namely, conventional, aquaponic, hydroponic, and agrophotovoltaic will be implemented on separate benches of SusMedHouse in order to study the effect of cultivation method on the greenhouse efficiency and preservation of resources.
SusMedHouse will be examined and tested at least for a year and results will be shared with dissemination activities.

Goals

overall objectives:
- Qualitative and quantitative increase in greenhouse production, while boosting the overall efficiency by at least 20%
- Develop new safer methods for pest and pathogen management
- Efficient use of resources (energy, soil and water)
- Prevent eutrophication
- Contribute to circular economy in agriculture, providing sustainability
- Build a high-tech, eco-friendly greenhouse which require less intensive hand labor.

WP6- (led by ISAFOM-CNR) overall objective:
- Develop innovative biodegradable, peat-free growth media for plants
specific objectives:
- Recycle and valorize source-selected Organic Wastes (OW) for composting
- Optimize composting in order to maximize the agronomic value of the final product
- Produce High Quality Compost (HQC) with excellent agronomic features (high biological stability and maturity, absence of phytotoxicity, richness in phytonutrients, potential suppressiveness against soil-borne diseases) to be used as peat surrogate in the preparation of Growing Media (GM) for sustainable greenhouse- potted cultivations
- Realize innovative GM by mixing HQC with selected natural inorganic matter, such as zeolites.
