The Italian Science Fund (FIS) has funded two research projects of Cnr - Istituto di Struttura della Materia: "ASTRAL" and "ATPIC".

The FIS scheme of the Italian Ministry of University and Research aims to support projects of high scientific value with an interdisciplinary, innovative, and pioneering approaches to the development of fundamental research.

The primary objective is to promote the development of fundamental research according to established European methods, modeled after the European Research Council (ERC). The call selected 326 proposals from over 5,000 submissions, awarding a total of €432 million.

Marco Di Giovannantonio is the Principal Investigator per ASTRAL which has been finianced with 1500K€. ASTRAL is pioneering a new generation of nanocatalysts by engineering single-atom platforms with precisely controlled asymmetric active sites. Using on-surface synthesis, advanced microscopy, and theory-guided design, the project targets efficient sensing and catalysis. The main goal is to unveil new design principles at the atomic scale that can advance sustainable, high-performance devices for a low-carbon future.

ATPIC, whose Principal Investigator is Jacopo Stefano Pelli Cresi and which is funded with over €1,300K, is a project aimed at maximizing solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency by harnessing the infrared portion of the solar spectrum as an active driver for charge carrier mobility.
