The "M216" expedition is currently underway aboard the research vessel Meteor, a major international mission within the GO-SHIP / Med-SHIP programme, led by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, aimed at assessing the state of the Mediterranean Sea along a long-term observational time series.

CNR is also participating in the expedition with 7 researchers and technicians from 3 different research Institutes:

- Cnr-Ismar, co-leader of the expedition, responsible for physical oceanographic measurements and eDNA analyses within BIO GO-SHIP

- Cnr-Irbim, providing technical support for onboard scientific instrumentation

- Cnr-Ibf, contributing to research on dissolved organic carbon (DOC)

Research activities include measurements of temperature, salinity, water mass circulation, nutrients and gases, and biodiversity estimates from the surface to the deep ocean, to better understand the impacts of climate change and the evolution of Mediterranean ecosystems.

Observations extend from the eastern Mediterranean (Cyprus) to the Strait of Gibraltar, covering all major Mediterranean basins. The data collected are essential to compare the current state of the sea with the previous surveys of the time series, carried out in 2011 and 2018.

A key contribution to advancing knowledge and protecting one of the most vulnerable and strategically important seas on the planet.
