The “Raw Materials Security of Europe Conference” took place on September 12 in Prague with the aim of identifying risks and providing solutions to the critical raw materials procurement, in particular metals, necessary for the energy transition and the green technologies development: the National Research Council of Italy was represented by researcher Armida Torreggiani, of the Institute for Organic Synthesis and Photoreactivity (Isof) in Bologna.

In the document shared at the conclusion of the event, it was estimated that within 30 years there will be a massive increase in the demand by the industrial sector for minerals and metals, that are in short supply in Europe, and therefore an increase in dependence on the main producing country, the Republic of China. In Europe there are deposits rich in some of these raw materials, but cultural resistance on the part of local communities towards mining activities makes their implementation complex. The concluding note of the Conference therefore highlights the need for coordinated and widespread actions towards society, starting from the younger generations, in order to increase knowledge in the raw materials sector and raise awareness of its importance.

The Cnr, an authoritative actor in the scientific dissemination in the educational world, had the aim of illustrating the methodology developed in over 15 years of activity, both locally - with the national network of The Language of Research (LdR) – and internationally through projects funded by the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT):  the task was accomplished by the Torreggiani, who showed the effective involvement of students in learning paths making connections between the academic and research world, the word of production and the school world, and the virtuous innovation mechanisms enhancing skills and disseminating knowledge.

The event was organized as part of the initiatives promoted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, on the occasion of its European Presidency. The Conference was attended by the representatives of the government institutions both of the member states and of the countries bordering the Czech Republic (such as Norway, UK, Iceland, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine).
