On Friday, March 27th 2026, the Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development of the National Research Council of Italy (Cnr-Iriss) will host the seminar “Surat@Naples: Port Cities between Stratification and Cross-fertilization”, dedicated to exploring the historical and cultural dynamics shaping port cities.
The initiative, organized by Barbara Bertoli (Cnr-Iriss), is structured in two sessions. The morning session will consist of a heritage walk aimed at discovering Naples’ urban stratifications through an on-site exploration of the city’s layered historical landscape. The afternoon session will take place at the Cnr Iriss Lecture Hall and will open with institutional greetings by Paolo Landri (Cnr-Iriss Director) and Dilip A. Patel (SVNIT Surat, SPARC Project coordinator).
The seminar will include an introduction by Gabriella Esposito (Cnr Iriss), followed by a series of presentations by Binita Pandya (RI_CHArt) on the Surat (India) port-city narratives, and Giuseppe Pace, Barbara Bertoli and Giovanni Carlo Bruno (Cnr-Iriss), addressing key themes related to urban heritage, historical stratification of the built environment, and cultural interactions.
The programme features contributions on narratives of diversity, the interpretation of urban heritage, the historical stratification of Naples - particularly in the port and Royal Palace areas - and migration and cultural dynamics in the Mediterranean.
The event builds on recent research activities carried out within the framework of the SPARC – Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (Ministry of Education, Government of India), within the project “Enhancing Cultural Resilience of the Third-Generation Diaspora through Digital Technologies and Storytelling of Indian Tangible and Intangible Heritage”, as a follow-up to recent international workshops and fieldwork initiatives focused on cultural heritage, digital technologies and storytelling.
The seminar will conclude with a discussion and Q&A session with the online participation of SVNIT scholars and students, followed by closing remarks and an informal get-together.
