Abstract
Global warming is influencing meteorology in temperate areas, causing longer periods of drought and resulting in shortage of freshwater from natural sources in highly anthropized areas (e.g. Lombardy). In this perspective, local authorities and international entities promote policies towards a more efficient use of waters and the reuse of treated wastewaters (e.g. in agriculture). According to the current Italian and European legislations the effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) reusable for agriculture need to meet a number of parameters regarding chemical, physical, and microbiological pollutants. The required effluent quality is generally reached by applying tertiary treatments of wastewater disinfection including chemical (e.g. peracetic acid, ozone) or physical (e.g. UV radiation, sand filtration) processes. Unfortunately, the currently applied technologies are inefficient in removing several contaminants of emerging concerns including the determinants of antibiotic resistance, namely antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). These are still not considered in the legislations but already under evaluation for the incoming revision o
