Abstract
  • Aerial wind-mediated dust transportation represents one of the mechanisms determining microbial dispersion. Particles and the associated microflora, can be scattered across the Earth's surface via dry and wet depositions, affecting biodiversity and function of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and impacting on human health when of pathogenic nature. The aim of D.U.S.T. (Desert Upon Sardinian Territory) is to define the identities of microorganisms carried by Saharan dust to Sardinia (Italy) through culture-based and cultivation-independent methods. Data comparison and integration could provide interesting clues concerning the contribution of this mechanism of geographical dispersion to the biodiversity modulation and its possible effects on ecosystems and human health and activities.
