Graduated in Electronic Engineering at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza'. Specialization in Biomedical Engineering. Since 1987 he is researcher at the Italian National Research Council (C.N.R.). After having joined the Institute for Biomedical Technologies (ITBM), he now joins the Institute of Clinical Physiology in Rome (IFC). He is Head of "Telecardiology & Clinical Applications of Numerical Modelling of Biological Systems" Research Unit of the National Institute for Cardiovascular Research (I.N.R.C.). His main research interest is in the field of biomedical engineering (modelling of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems for research, educational and clinical applications; modeling of mechanical circulatory and ventilatory assist devices; telecardiology assistance; e-Learning for health care professionals). He acts as project evaluator and reviewer in the UE e-Health sector. He is project evaluator, reviewer for: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft German Research Foundation; The Technology agency of the Czech Republic and Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation.He is project evaluator, reviewer and expert for different Italian public administrations: "Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico in Innovazione Tecnologica"; "Ministero dell'Istruzione dell'Università e della Ricerca MiUR"; Sicilia, Lazio, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria and Calabria regions. He is author of more 140 international referred articles, many chapters in books and he is editor of four books. He has served in many "Editorial Board" for several international journals. Actually he is in the scientific council of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Research (I.N.R.C.) and he is bioengineering scientific consultant for the Department of Biomedical Science of the C.N.R. In November 2015 received the title of "DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA" from the Board of Teaching University GEOMEDI (Tbilisi - Georgia).

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM MODELING: R&D of software to implement numerical and hybrid simulators (numerical/hydraulic and numerical/electric) of the cardiovascular system. Clinical data validation. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM MODELING: of heart-lung interaction during mechanical ventilation and mechanical circulatory assistance. Clinical data validation. CARDIAC RESYNCHRONIZATION THERAPY (CRT): R&D of a numerical model of the cardiovascular system enables to reproduce severe and moderate heart failure (HF) and the effects of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) using a biventricular pacemaker. The software will be useful for cardiologist to optimize pacemaker temporization. The device is equipped with a software enabling to predict (using numerical models) starting from measured data, haemodynamic and energetic parameter values that cannot be directly measured. E-LEARNING AND MEDICAL SIMULATION TRAINING (MST): courses for medical clinical and biomedical engineer students and for physicians and other medical professionals (i.e. Cardilogists, Cardiac Surgeons, Anesthetists, Family medicine physicians, Clinical perfusionists nurses, etc.). NUMERICAL STEM CELL THERAPY: R&D of a numerical model to analyze nutrient transport and cardiac stem cell proliferation in an ischemic area of the heart. Heart Failure: "in silico" and "in vitro" mesenchymal stem cell study

In the last years, the regenerative potential of stem cells for treating heart failure has led to an explosion in clinical investigations. Cell transplantation into the damaged myocardium (Cell Therapy) has received extensive attention and the evidence from both pre-clinical and clinical studies suggests that cell transplantation could be a potential strategy able to restore the heart function. Stem cell regeneration therapy consists in disseminating stem cells able to differentiate around the necrotic tissue damaged by heart failure. This therapy is performed with the aim of gradually replacing the necrotic tissue with healthy cells. IFC-CNR researchers developed a numerical model able to simulate the various stages of cardiac tissue regeneration tissue, following cell transplantation after heart failure. The aim of this project is to validate the model with in vitro experiments using human mesenchymal stem cells and to extend it at transcriptomic level studying microRNA (miRNA) expression by Real Time PCR.

The aim of the topic is to develop strategies and mechanisms in order to cope with threats both of intentional and accidental origin that can affect the various modules that constitute the Health system. The aim is also to improve effi ciency and effectiveness during health emergencies. In a scenario like that immediately following the occurrence of catastrophic events (floods, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, etc.) the medical and paramedical staff, operating under severely extreme conditions, must be able to evaluate the general condition of patients, provide first aid on site, deployment of health facilities, possible transfer to the structures able to provide the assistance required. During public Health emergencies (and also not in emergencies situations), surgery rooms are considered at a high risk of infection because they have high values in the incidence of infection hospital. The goal is oriented towards the reduction of the microbial environment, towards the development of systems to improve patient safety in the therapeutic and surgical procedures, including the ability to deploy at Health care field.

The aim of the project involved the use of numerical simulators of the cardiovascular system in order to support physicians in their clinical activity. 1] The project has allowed us to implement within the CARDIOSIM software (CARDIOSIM is a numerical simulator of the cardiovascular system developed at IFC-CNR Insitute) modules in order to simulate the effects induced by a biventricular pacemacker (BiV) on cardiovascular haemodynamic and ventricular energetic variables. Using CARDIOSIM to reproduce the hemodynamic conditions of 35 patients (treated at: Unit of Cardiology, University "La Sapienza") affected by congestive heart failure. Starting from the measured pathological conditions (on 35 patients) the software has been used (as an aid in the programming of the implanted BiV) in order to obtain the best hemodynamic and energetic cardiocirculatory conditions of the patient. 2] Study of the effects induced by AMLODIPINE and ADENOSINE inside the coronary bed. Comparing beetween measured and simulated data (using CARDIOSIM software). Data were measured on 20 patients treated at IFC-CNR of Pisa. 3] Telecardiology: studies regarding the possibility to predict, using numerical models, the trend of some cardiovascular parameters (measurable in "invasive" mode) starting from measured parameters in a "non-invasive" mode (in patient resident in remote place).

The course is designed to provide the tools for interpreting the arterioventricular interaction in circulatory and pathophysiological conditions during pharmacological assistance, mechanical circulatory and/or ventilatory assistance. Specific objectives of the course are: 1] representation of the behavior or characteristics of the cardiovascular system through the use of another system, (i.e. computer program designed for the purpose); 2] presentation and use of tools for the numerical simulation of the cardiovascular system, 3] analisys of the used tools, 4] know of the tools limits, 5] construction of pathological situations and specific interventions in order to recover the normal circulatory conditions, 6] presentation and use of tools for the numerical simulation of the mechanical circulatory/ventilatory assist devices (Art]ificial Organs), 7] contribute to the education and mentorship of healthcare system educators and education researchers interested in creating or evaluating simulation based teaching methodologies.

TARGET The course is designed in order to provide the basic knowledge for the interpretation in mathematical terms of hemodynamic and physiopathological phenomena. Their subsequent transformation into numerical models used in the clinical environment, allows the use of it for the analysis and the prediction. The course is addressed to professional profiles such as students and graduate of the faculty of medicine, general practitioners, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, ICU physicians, clinical perfusionist and nurses. The course is addressed also to biomedical and clinical engineer students

The IORA Workshop on Biomedical-engineering and other Innovative Technologies with relevance to Post-Disaster Situations was held in Aachen from 18 - 21 November 2019 in Germany. The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Member States, located within and around the Indian Ocean rim, are prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, floods, droughts, and volcanic eruptions. As a result of climate change, extreme weather phenomena with the accompanying natural hazards are on the rise, alongside man-made hazards such as oil spills, and water, sea and air pollution. These effects are rising in frequency, with increasingly devastating results for our natural environment and alarming prospects of future generations.

The Workshop welcomed Disaster Risk Management (DRM) participants from 11 IORA Member States (Bangladesh, Iran, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Tanzania). Though-provoking presentations by experts and professionals from German, Japanese, Italian and Iranian research and engineering institutions, universities, and bio-medical practitioners, were held on 18 - 19 November 2019. The Lectures covered a broad range of topics related to post disaster situations, including advanced biomedical engineering, telemedicine systems, air aid emergency, safe sanitation solutions and sea water desalination among other.

SIMULATION IN ADVANCED HEART FAILURE WITH A VIEW TO SELECTION AND OPTIMIZATION OF DEVICE THERAPY

Introduction: Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) are mechanical pumps designed to provide hemodynamic support in patients with advanced heart failure. The introduction of VADs has revolutionized heart failure management, providing increased functional capacity and quality of life for patients. Simulation is an educational method based on virtual reproduction of real or close to real life situations. Modeling and simulation may become clinically applicable tools for detailed evaluation of the cardiovascular system and clinical decision-making to guide therapeutic intervention. Aim of the study: The use of a simulation approach for the optimization of device-based treatment, in order to guide therapeutic intervention in advanced heart failure. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on the hemodynamic data of six heart failure patients from the Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure Service, Glasgow, UK, previously discussed at a multidisciplinary meeting. The aim was to compare the outcome of the simulations with the previously made clinical decisions in order to find out any relationship that may be applicable on a routine basis in future patient assessment. The thesis was developed at the Institute of Clinical Physiology (National Research Council IFC-CNR), in the Cardiovascular Numerical/Hybrid Modeling Lab of Rome, using the software CARDIOSIM©, a numerical simulator of the cardiovascular system. Different mechanical circulatory support systems have been implemented in the simulator in order to study the interaction between assist devices and the cardiovascular system in terms of hemodynamic and ventricular energetic parameters. Results: Overall, the outcome of the simulations showed results that are consistent with the decisions made by Multidisciplinary Team Meetings (Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure Service, Glasgow, UK) Statistical Analysis performed through a Student's t-test and a Mann-Whitney test overall confirmed the accuracy of CARDIOSIM© in reproducing the different haemodynamic parameters. The outcome of the simulations addressed the value of a more quantitative approach in the clinical decision process. Conclusions: Despite the preliminary nature of this study and the limited number of patients considered, CARDIOSIM© has the potential to deliver reliable simulations for a more quantitative and critical evaluation of device/drug treatment and optimization in advanced heart failure. The clinician remains the ultimate decision-maker but relies on an additional tool that may reduce unnecessary guess work and uncertainty.


Analyzing the Behavior of ECG (corpuls3-GS Elektromedizinische Gerate G. Stemple GmbH) monitoring/acquisition system: a comparative study between simulated and real-time measured data

Electrocardiography (ECG) is a non-invasive technique and has been established as a primary tool for monitoring and diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. The information provided by the electrocardiograph (monitoring) becomes a crucial source for assessing the state of heart. However, the low amplitude of the ECG signals makes them susceptible to various noise sources and artefacts. Therefore, the contaminated ECG signal can be wrongly interpreted by physicians as a result of any loss or modification in the acquired ECG signals. The quality and reliability of ECG signals, acquired by the ECG acquisition system, become directly dependent on various factors required for designing of an acquisition system. In this study, the behaviour of ECG (corpuls3 - GS Elektromedizinische Geräte GmbH) data acquisition was theoretically analysed. The validation was performed within a simulation using a computer-based model. The analysis of the ECG amplifier using in corpuls3 was focused on four different subjects, which can be sorted as following: o The effect of parameter variations on common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of corpuls3 system o The functionality of the Right Leg Drive (RLD) circuit of corpuls3 under different conditions o Currently used anti-aliasing filter bandwidth consideration with respect to different parameters o The quality of precordial lead signals, which are calculated based on the currently existing method of acquiring ECG data in GS amplifier system and the possibility of its improvement The theoretical analysis along with the simulation created a methodology, which may be used as a basis for future design of ECG data acquisition system as well as enhancement of currently existing design in the GS company. Electrode-skin impedance is another factor, which may also impact the quality of the recorded biological signals, more specifically for the human electrocardiogram (ECG) in this study. Knowledge of the skin-electrode interface properties helps in design and development of the ECG data acquisition systems, which shall be characterized by giving higher quality and more accurate results that are most similar to the in-body generated biological signal. Therefore, in the second part of this work, the author used a method meant for skin-electrode interface impedance measurement and examining its parametrical variation in different conditions. In this study the skin is stimulated, by a current with very low amplitude. The response signal is captured by an Ag/AgCl electrode in the next step. The related parameters are then extracted by means of numerical methods.
