The call for chapters is now open for the new CNR-DSU editorial project Plural Mediterranean: Perspectives from the South and East of the Mediterranean. Interconnected Transitions, Societies and Futures of the Mediterranean, edited by Salvatore Capasso, Giovanni Canitano, and Ouafae Nahli.
The book, forthcoming with Il Mulino (print edition, e-book, and open access), seeks to substantially renew the analytical frameworks through which the contemporary Mediterranean is interpreted, by placing at the centre the perspectives, experiences, and transformation trajectories of countries on the southern and eastern shores, with particular attention to scientific production in the Arabic language.
Objectives
The project aims to valorise a plurality of narratives and analytical approaches that are often underrepresented in the international academic debate, thereby contributing to a more balanced and polycentric understanding of Mediterranean dynamics. Within this framework, the Mediterranean is interpreted not only as a space of interconnection, but also as a mosaic of differentiated experiences, characterised by non-linear and often divergent development trajectories.
Main Themes
The call welcomes contributions addressing a broad range of topics, including:
- theoretical and methodological perspectives from the South and East of the Mediterranean;
- demographic, social, and economic transformations;
- climate change, natural resources, and adaptation strategies;
- innovation, digitalisation, and inclusion;
- governance, regional cooperation, and emerging geographies of interaction;
- future scenarios and plural visions of the Mediterranean.

Contributions may be submitted in Arabic (with an English abstract) or in English, with openness to bilingual submissions. All chapters will undergo a double-blind peer review process.
