Business and Human Rights Summer School. The eighth edition kicks off

The eight edition of the "Business and Human Rights Summer School" will be held from 17th to 21stJune 2024 at the premises of the Temple University in Rome.

As usual the Course, one of the outcomes of the research activities performed in the subject matter by the reserachers of the Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development (Cnr-Iriss), is meant to provide to scholars coming from all over the world an understanding of the main challenges concerning the contemporary debate on business and human rights while keeping up with current relevant developments at national, regional and international level. The programme focuses on the content of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and on the other rules developed at international and at national level. Lectures, in particular, will deepen vwry timely and important topics such as the State duty to protect human rights; the corporate responsibility to respect human rights; and the victims’ access to remedy. 

In addition, thematic fora will focus currently debated topics:
a) the new directive on Corporate sustainability due diligence (featuring Heidi Hautala, former member of the Working Group on Responsible Business conduct of the European Parliament)
b) the Business and Human Rights and in the era of the technology and Artificial intelligence. The final roundtable on "The Global-South Perspectiveon Business and Human Rights" will be held at the premises of the hadquarters of the CNR (“Sala A”, Biblioteca del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche).

Speakers include some of the major worldwide experts in this area and among the others:
- Michael Addo, University of Notre Dame and former UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights
- Nadia Bernaz, Wageningen University and Research
- Sabrina Ugolini, President of the Inter-ministerial Committee for Human Rights (CIDU) Anita Ramasastry, former member of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights
- Andrea Shemberg, Global Business Initiative on Human Rights (GBIHR)
- Tara Van Ho, University of Essex.

The Summer School, the first in Italy entirely devoted to the business and human rights debate, is the result of the scientific collaborations with the Wageningen University and Research, the University of Milan, and Human Rights International Corner association. The Course is an output of the research activities performed by Marco Fasciglione, CNR researcher and Co-director of the Summer School. Marco Fasciglione, a human rights scholar, is the Principal Investigator of the CNR project “CO.RE. Corporate Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence and the promotion of Corporate Responsibility”. He also serves as Alternate in the Management Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA).
