On September 14-17, 2021, the series of Conferences “How to be a researcher in the XXI century: Challenges and new paradigms in a changing society”, particularly addressed to students/young scholars, will take place in Milan (Area della Ricerca Milano 1, Via Corti 12).

During 4 days, 5 sessions, 8 workshops and 2 social activities will involve 20 speakers and over 40 participants in discussions that have a common goal: to tackle the challenges young researchers currently face and to re-think the role of science in society. Each panel will explore topics related to science communication, mental health, diversity & inclusion, gender dimension, transdisciplinarity and open science: during the workshops, alternative scenarios will be discussed with the participants.

The event is promoted by the Center for Excellence and Transdisciplinary Studies (Cest) in collaboration with the Institute for Remote Sensing of Environment (Cnr-Irea) of Milano and is supported by the Young Scholars Initiative of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) and by Elsevier; it is also supported by BRIDGES, a research project funded by Fondazione Cariplo, which aims to understand the science-society relationship starting from what young Italian researchers think of this relationship.

"We are happy to promote an initiative that tackles such an important issue", affirms Alba L'Astorina, from Irea-Cnr, coordinator of the BRIDGES project. "Often young people operate in an environment that does not seem to have acquired total awareness of the profound transformations that are taking place in society and in science itself; this can create discomfort and increase the feeling of disconnect between what they do, as researchers, and what society needs. For this reason, it is important that the discussion on alternative narratives of doing research in and for society takes place involving firsthand its youngest protagonists. "

The very formula of the entire Conference seems to go in this direction: each panel will in fact involve an exponent from the world of research, a young scholar, and a representative from the non-academic world.

In addition to providing local support, Cnr-Irea will be involved in two moments of the event: on the second day, Rita Giuffredi will work with Sarah Davies, of the University of Vienna, in conducting a workshop on scientific communication; the final round table, entitled "Rethinking the academic division of labor through transdisciplinary" will be moderated by Alba L'Astorina, who, together with scholars from various fields, will explore the opportunities offered by a transdisciplinary approach to rethinking the organization of work in the academic field. On this occasion, the BRIDGES project, involving, beyond Cnr (with the Ibe, Ibba and Irpps institutes), also Pianpicollo Selvatico - Center for research in the arts and sciences, the University of Edinburgh and Cest itself, will also be presented.
