Abstract

Innovative methodologies will be developed to combine satellite data, in-situ measurements, atmospheric forcings and diagnostic models in synergy, and produce new environmental data over the North Atlantic Ocean, specifically filling the present observational gaps of ocean currents in the upper layers. New data will also serve to better respond to research needs aiming to include ecosystem considerations in the provision of scientific advice to fishery management in the area.

Goals

We will develop a daily (sub)mesoscale product of 3D ocean currents (u,v,w), at mesoscale-resolving spatial resolution (1/10°x1/10°), over a wide section of the central/North Atlantic Ocean (NATL3D). NATL3D product will cover a minimum of ten years (2010-2019) and will be based on a combination of satellite data, in-situ measurements, atmospheric forcings and diagnostic models in synergy.
Knowledge of full 3D currents down to depths below the deepest mixed layer will then allow the exploration of the potential impact of long term oceanic variability on the population dynamics of different fish species. This includes the investigation of the role of frontal meanders and eddies in the transport and dispersal of eels' larvae, of the vertical exchanges at the base of the euphotic layer and their potential impact on primary productivity
