Day 1 of the Gaia Blu cruise

The WOMBlue oceanographic cruise left the harbor of Civitavecchia on Friday, August 1st, aboard Gaia Blu, the research vessel of the National Research Council of Italy.

The cruise is the second part of the training program of the project "Women in Blue: training opportunities in ocean science" (https://www.isa.org.jm/women-in-blue-initiative/), proposed by the CNR Institute of Marine Sciences. The program aims to offer training on the job in marine geology and oceanography to women scholars from around the world, with a particular focus on less scientifically and technologically developed countries.

Seven scientists selected from those who participated in the "Marine Geology Advanced School: Deep-Sea Frontiers," organized in Bologna by CNR-Ismar in January 2025, are now hosted on board R/V Gaia Blu.

The cruise will end on Thursday, August 7, the scientists will be supervised by a CNR-Ismar team and will have the opportunity to learn several techniques for acquisition and processing of marine geophysical data, physical properties of the water column and eDNA sampling of both the seabed and the water column. The aim of these activities is to explore the geological processes at the seabed and how they influence the biodiversity distribution over specific underwater structures, such as seamounts, in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea.

"This women's training project was selected for funding in July 2024 by the International Seabed Authority Partnership Fund in the call for proposals "ISAPF at 30," explains Marzia Rovere (CNR-Ismar), coordinator of the Women in Blue project. "With this project, we intend to support the development of skills in the field of deep-sea research for young talented women coming from developing and least developed countries, to foster new professional opportunities for them, to promote collaborations and networking, and to empower women in marine research."
