Dr. Silvia M. Pietralunga is a Researcher at the Institute for Photonics and Nanotechnologies (IFN) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) in Milan, Italy. She graduated M. Sc. (cum laude) in Electronics Engineering (1993) from the technical university Politecnico di Milano, and got her Ph.D. in Electronics and Communication Engineering (1998). -She started her career in photonics for optical communications, first as an adjunct lecturer at the Dept. of Electronics of Politecnico di Milano, and then with Corecom, a private research consortium ofby Pirelli SpA and Politecnico di Milano. In Corecom, she became Principal Investigator, Head of the Material Research Lab and of the Physical Optics Lab. Research-and-development activities were related to the processing and switching of signals for fiber-optics communications. More in details, Dr. Pietralunga worked on: -design, realization and test of electrooptical modulators for optical signal at 1500nm, in semiconductors and semi-insulating materials, aiming specifically at the comprehension of photoconductive and electronic transport phenomena. -Linear and nonlinear optical effects for the processing of fiber-optics signals; Linear optical spectroscopy ( ellipsometry) and determination of nonlinear optical figures of merit in optical materials. -State of polarization of fiber-optics signals: study of the evolution of the polarization in propagation in optical fibers and cables, polarization mode dispersion and related compensating techniques; -Photoelastic optical tomography for the determination of the stress field and birefringence in specialty optical fibers and waveguides. -Photon statistics of amplified optical signals and related impact on the performance of transmitted telecom signals. -Materials science: growth and characterization of nanostructured and hybrid photonic materials; epitaxial growth of Germanium fims over Silicon substrates by magnetron sputtering, for CMOS-compatible integrated photodiodes; growth of tellurite glass thin films by reactive magnetron sputtering for integrated nonlinear optical devices; -Plasmonics; -Hybrid integration and packaging of optical and optoelectronic subystems. In 2009 she joined Fondazione Politecnico di Milano and became involved in photovoltaics and photonics for energy applications. Presently, as a tenure researcher at IFN-CNR, she is involved in surface science research, by Scanning Auger Micro-spectroscopy, light-matter interaction, and nano photonics for energy applications. S. M. Pietralunga took part into national and international research projects, in the areas of Optical Technologies, Physical Optics, and photonics for energy. She is Adjunct Professor of Experimental Physics at Politecnico di Milano. S. M. Pietralunga has authored more than 100 international publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, besides 9 granted international patents.

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Scanning Auger Microspectroscopy (SAM) in collaboration with the Dept. of Physics at Politecnico di Milano. Performed analysis: - Chemical composition and oxidation state of nanosctuctured materials. Assessment of the thickness of ultra-thin films and 2D materials, using Auger spectroscopy. - Local chemical composition of polycrystalline InP - on-Si thin films, as active material in photovoltaic cells. - Stoichiometry depth profiling of quasi-amorphous nanocrystalline thin films of Tungsten Oxide. Auger micro-spectroscopy of Tungsten Oxide nanorods on amorphous W. - Local compositional analysis of Black Silicon, nanostructured by plasma reactive chemical etching, to improve optical trapping at surface and optical absorption in solar cells and for biomedical applications. - Morphology of nanostructured WO3 for photoelectrochemistry.

In collaboration with the Dept. of Physics of Politecnico di Milano and with CNST@IIT, development and commissioning of a laser-assisted Ultrafast dynamical SEM technique (USEM), operating in Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) in pump-probe configuration. USEM detects the dynamics of optically excited charge configuration and photovoltages at surface. Characterization of photoinduced charge dynamics at Si(100) surface, in dependence on the conditions of preparation. Development and commisisoning of a dynamical SEM technique in real-time for the characteriazion of photoinduced physical and chemical effects. Characterization of dynamical polarization phenomena at the surface of hybrid perovskite MAPbI3 thin films, in view of applications in concentrated photovoltaics and light sources.

Reference person for CNR-IFN for activities on Photovoltaics. Internal collabroations with research groups in CNR-IFN on nanostructured luminescent materials for applciations to photovoltaics and sensors. Partecipation in H2020 CSA Projects supporting the activities of the European Photonics platform PPP Photonics21 , as key-person for the italian partner ( see dedicated Section). Among the first scientific collaborators and employees of the Research Consortium COreCom ( COnsortium for the Research in Optical Processing and Switching - Milan), in collaboration with the Dept. of Electronics at the Politecnico di Milano.
As the Manager for the Area Materials and Devices for Photonic communications, I contributed to the setup and commissioning of the Labs organized and initiated experimental activities on electrooptics, acoustooptics, photoconductive properties of materials, as well as optical spectroscopy and nonlinear ultrafast characterizations of materials and devices. R&D management activities, related to fabrication and characterization of devices for optical communications, as well as growth of advanced materials and functional characterization. Manager of the Optical Switching Laboratory- Area Materials and Devices and of the Physical-Optics Lab. Project Leader of activities and Tasks of CoreCom, in the frame of national and international research Projects. As main research themes: - Optical linear and nonlinear characterization of photonic materials: absorption spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, optical Kerr effect and nonlinear optical spectroscpy ( Maker fringes method). - Experimental apparata to measure the degree of birefringence (also stress-related) and optical State of Polarization (dynamical polarimetry and photoelastic tomography). EuroPho21 Implementing the European Photonics21 PPP strategy

Photonics21 is the European Technology Platform (ETP) for photonics. The ETP has joined and supported public and private efforts in this sector since early years.Through the InnoPho21 project (01.09.2011-30.08.2014) national Technology Platforms and Strategic Research Agendas have been established to further strengthen the photonics community in Europe. The proposed follow up CSA project EuroPho21 is building upon these successes and the democratic structures established and will bring photonics to the next level, namely to re-industrialise Europe. EuroPho21 will provide the critical support for strategy development and implementation of the Photonics21 PPP in Horizon 2020 by involving the whole photonics and end user community. The consortium partners represent the National Technology Platforms (NTP) in Europe. These NTPs have been established to mirror the Photonics21 activities in the Member States and provide the link to the regional photonics clusters. The EuroPho21 project proposal is submitted by the European Technology Platform Photonics21 secretariat VDI Technologiezentrum in cooperation with 12 National Technology Platforms at the request, with the consent and on behalf of the Photonics21 Executive Board, the Photonics21 Board of Stakeholders and with the support of the Photonics21 association (the private partner organisation to the European Commission in the Horizon 2020 Photonics PPP). EuroPho21 sets up a powerful European structure to make use of one of the most powerful technologies to lead Europe on the fast track to economic recovery, to create jobs and growth in Europe and to provide solutions to the societal challenges of Europe.

In collaboration with the Institute for Plasma Physics -Piero Caldirola, SEM characterization at the nanoscale of the morphological features of chromium coatings on varnished polymeric substrates. Chromium coatings are deposited by plasma sputtering. Top-view and section-view SEM images have been taken. Cryo fracture in liquid Nitrogen has been performed, to minimize structural damaging of the exposed l cross-sections.

Experimental details and SEM images are reported in the final Report of the activity.

FIlms grown by first a phorphorization of nano-islands of In deposited on Si, and then by growing the InP grains. Applications are in the cost-effective growth of thin films for third-generation photovoltaics. Details can be found in the published paper by Metaferia et al., JAP, vol. 116, 033519 (2014).
