Interest areas:

My current research interests follow the principles of the Ambient Intelligence and of the semantics. My intent is to create an ecosystem inside a technologically equipped home that is based on ontologies and artificial intelligence algorithms. The ecosystem aims to achieve four main objectives:

  • it must be able to make interoperable devices that belong to different standards and technologies, making them compatible with each other;
  • carry out in a independently way, complex tasks choosing the best solution according to the current context;
  • learn and anticipate the user's needs in order to improve its comfort within the environment;
  • protect the user from possible diseases or worsening of its state of health.

Carrying out the activities and drafting of the related project deliverables, within the project of industrial research, experimental development and training entitled "Shared and interoperable home ecosystems for sustainable, comfortable and safe living environments (SHELL)". The work refers to the following Realistic Objectives: OR 1 "Interoperability Framework", OR 2 "Energy Efficiency Manager, OR 3 "Comfort Manager, OR 4 "Safety and Security Manager, OR 5- "Interoperable Data Sharing and Exposure". My research furnished important contributions to the definition of basic architectural model of the system and its functioning. I also contributed actively to implement portions of code to be inserted into the SHELL platform core and I implemented the integration of the KNX technology within the system. The result was the release of the software driver able to make communicate the SHELL platform with connected KNX devices. For the implementation I have studied and used the open-source library named Calimero 2, and I used the maven platform for the collaborative management of the software project. The functions implemented by the driver that I developed are mainly: a) the representation of the KNX devices in the SHELL abstraction level; b) sending commands from SHELL to KNX device and vice versa; c) reading the updates sent by KNX devices about their status and the notification of such events in the SHELL platform; d) management and conversion of different data types and events defined in the KNX technology in SHELL data types and events, and vice versa. I given support for the development and integration of the By-Me BTicino technology in SHELL.

The project aims to transform the house into a set of shared interoperable ecosystems modeling the technology on the occupants for an environment that alongside the traditional home automation functions that can produce those actions and sensations that make it tailored to its inhabitants. Results: During the period, the goal of creating a domestic ecosystem in which all technical and technological components interact, exchange information, cooperate in an interoperable way to improve the living environment, make it safer and more efficient. The following project reports have been produced - analysis of the state of the art criteria for the performance measurability of the interoperability framework, the energy efficiency manager, the thermo-hygrometric comfort manager and the acoustic and visual comfort manager; - analysis of the methodologies for the performance characterization of the energy efficiency manager; - contribution to the adaptation to the interoperability framework of gateways with general characteristics; - contribution to the definition of the interoperability framework architecture with analysis of constraints and interactions with LAN; - contribution to the definition of criteria and policies for data sharing and selection of data to be shared. My research included: a) the study of the state of the art relating to techniques to recognize the habitual behavior pattern of a user within an environment, in order to identify abnormal events, with particular attention to the sleep activities. Study of the statistical and data mining techniques related correlation and similarities indices among data. Study of Matlab software platform, to be used as a preliminary bench for data analysis. Study of the IBM Bluemix Cloud Platform, its peculiarities and testing to verify its effectiveness with respect to the design specifications. Study of the Python programming language and libraries for managing data as Pandas; b) implementation of the algorithms for the sleep analysis quality, able to examine the data from the sensors present in the environment in order to: - find day by day, the start and end of sleep, the number of movements in the bed and waking, in relation to a range of dates; - determine the mean value of the duration of sleep, the number of movements in the bed and awakenings, in relation to a range of dates; - compare the sleep every day activities, such as duration, number of movements in the bed, number of awakenings, with the average of these values, in relation to a range of dates; c) implementation of data mining algorithms relating to the correlation and similarity indices to identify deviations of the habits of sleep activity compared to usual values; d) preliminary tests on IBM Bluemix platform and deploy it on the implemented prototypes in order to validate them.

Study and writing papers about the state of the art of the main communication middlewares related to the project, including those based on OSGi technology. Contribution in writing the questionnaire to be submitted to the end users of the project in order to identify requirements and to draft use cases. Participation in the platform's design and study, development and deploy of the following platform services: a) the communication middleware for sensor / actuator used for environmental and user's body parameters monitoring. The middleware is based on the Web Services paradigm (use of the Tomcat container) and the XML language. The middleware interfaces both wired and wireless protocols and exploits the Pub / Sub communication paradigms for the collection of sensor data. Acquired data are then analyzed using techniques of analysis on temporal series. Description: The current forecasts of the European demographic change for the future shows a gradual aging of the population. The main aim of the project is to study and develop technology solutions to improve the quality of life of older people by creating a new telecommunications' technology platform to simplify their daily activities (e.g. remembering the medicines to be taken, go to medical examinations, etc.), to improve their mobility (for example, by providing the tools to quickly and easily organize a trip and allow them a continuous audio / video contact with their loved ones); to make use of services offered by health institutions enabling effective interaction distance between doctors and patients; to provide multimedia services with appropriate information and entertainment. SOCIALIZE develops an electronic communication platform that can also facilitate the senior member taking into account its needs according to two main objectives: a) to develop new self-service electronic devices and promote its use among older people, encouraging social organizations in the creation of new services for the elderly; b) to facilitate the use of such devices for the elderly, by means of easy access to services, to promote his independence and participation in society. Description: In collaboration with a consortium of Tuscan companies, the study, design and implementation of a modular home automation system management, for the automation, monitoring and control to be applied in the nautical field. The study, the definition of the architecture, the development using Eclipse platform and deploy into OSX Server, of a dynamic web-based information web site for the research and the investigation of the ISFOL heritage. Information are stored on a databas that exports data in XML. Data are then processed and showed using W3C standards such as XSLT, CSS and Javascript techniques. Project call: Scientific collaboration between research public administration bodies. Coordinator: ISFOL Financing body: Public Institute of the Ministry of Labour (ISFOL). Description: Design, implementation and deployment of an information system for the environmental education, using the most advanced technologies of information distribution systems via the Internet and in databases. The information base is the result of the research and of the ISFOL surveys on training activities promoted and implemented in Italy by public and private entities on environmental issues. Results: a) construction of the prototype; b) design of the database; c) implementation and updating of the information system containing data on information, the monitoring and the environmental orientation; d) distribution of data over Internet; e) implementation of the man / machine interfaces used both locally and for the input of data, and for consultation on the Internet network.

Study and implementation in Java, using the NetBeans development environment and a GNU / Linux system, of a communication middleware for the home automation interoperability based on the paradigm of Web Services and on XML-based languages. The platform was created by studying and comparing the most important existing communication middleware and its implementation includes five modules to interface with five different home automation systems: KNX, UPnP, X10, MyHome, ByMe. The created platform introduces an update and data analysis mechanism for the sensors / actuators connected to the middleware that works through a publish / subscribe (pub / sub) mechanism. Study to install the middleware in embedded devices and implemenation of some parts of the middleware features in ANSI-C. Contribution to create the plant of the home automation system (selection, wiring and setting up of devices), and support for the creation of web and mobile user interfaces, to implement remote control. The ability to make to interoperate the home automation systems regardless their belonging technology introduces an innovation and an added value to the application. Financing body: Italian National Center for the Information technology in the Public Administration (CNIPA) Total budget: 810.000,00 euro. Budget for unit: ISTI-CNR: 55.000,00 euro. Description: The goal of the project is to introduce the "Integrated Participatory Budgeting" within public administrations, creating an hybrid process between "real" and "virtual" in which people can not only participate through the typical procedures like traditional meetings and assemblies expected places and time, but also learn, communicate, meet, discuss and plan online with no limits of predetermined space and time. Results: a) the testing of the platform in the Municipality of Rome; b) definition of methodologies and tools needed to start, manage and maintain online public participation practices in the administrations involved to integrate the participatory practices already in progress; c) support and development at the territories of the administrations involved, participating communities where communication, discussion and deliberation of citizens was facilitated by the use of info-communication technologies and in particular of Internet. d) creation and maintenance in the form of a network of a community of practice on participatory democracy in general, and of a partecipatory budgeting in particular, made by administrations and other stakeholders for the purpose of reuse of best practices tested in edem 1.0 project.
