International scientific organization

IASC - International Artic Science Committee

IASC was founded in 1990 and began its activity in 1991. At present it counts 18 national members. IASC member Organizations are national scientific organizations covering all fields of Arctic research. Each national member organization has a mechanism that allows it to keep no-stop and updated contacts between its representative in the IASC Council and the Arctic scientific community. IASC draws from this structure the ability to identify scientific priorities, members of its working groups, etc.

An international scientific program designed or recommended by IASC becomes high priority for the Arctic or global science. IASC’s organizational needs are covered by the IASC Secretariat, which is located in Stockholm.

IASC is one of the international organizations associated with the International Council for Science (ICSU) and is present as an observer in the Arctic Council. IASC has also connections with many international Arctic organizations.
