Progress in the chemistry of materials has allowed significant advances in the synthesis of colloidal nanoparticles. These nano-objects of a few nanometers in size have extraordinary chemical and physical properties and can be prepared in a wide range of compositions and shapes with precise size, shape and surface chemistry. However, in order to be effectively used in the manufacture of electronic elements and devices, nanoparticles must be able to be organized in micrometric dimensions.
Thanks to the expertise in the field, the prestigious Science Magazine invited dr. Marinella Striccoli of Cnr-Ipcf - Bari to comment in a Perspective article a revolutionary strategy proposed by Wang et al. resulting in the direct lithography of nano-objects. In fact, it is possible, by appropriately modifying their surface chemistry, to allow nanoparticles to act as a photoresist and to be structured through photolithographic techniques. This approach will enable the manufacture of innovative electronic devices by paving the way for new multi-function systems based on colloidal nanoparticles.
