IUCr - International Union of Crystallography

IUCr is a Union, and it is a member of the International Council for Science (ICSU). Its goals are to promote international cooperation in crystallography and to contribute to all aspects of crystallography, encourage international publication of crystallographic research results, facilitate the standardization of methods, units, terminology and symbols, and it represents a benchmark for relations between crystallography and other sciences. IUCr pursues these objectives by publishing in print and electronically: “The Online Crystallography Journal” a set of paramount scientific journals; the series of reference volumes “International Tables for Crystallography”; “Quarterly IUCr Newsletter”, distributed to crystallographers. In addition, it supports the “Online World Directory/Database of Crystallographers”, it assigns the “Ewald Prize” and organizes its Congress and General Assembly every three years. The IUCr XX Congress, attended by 3000 delegates from around the world, was held in Florence in August 2005 and was organized by CNR Institute of chemistry of organometallic compounds. In response to the program for a multi-stakeholder “Global Information Commons for Science Initiative”, IUCr has elaborated a formal declaration submitted by its representatives to the “Committee on Data for Science and Technology” (CODATA) and to the 'International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI). A more detailed explanatory document on this response and IUCr’s position, is available on the following web site http://www.iucr.org/. Responding to the public invitation to submit remarks to the “House of Commons Select Committee inquiry into scientific publications”, IUCr has prepared a written document called “Publishing Crystallography Journals in the Electronic Environment” which summarizes the methods and the Union's current policies on the production and distribution of high-level scientific journals.
