ICO - International Commission for Optics

ICO was created in 1947. It is a IUPAP "Affiliated Commission" and a "Scientific Associate" of ICSU. Its mission is to contribute, on an international basis, to the progress and spreading of knowledge in optics. The Commission has two categories of members: Territorial Committees (currently 50 members) and international organizations (currently 6 members). The Commission can also accept, as Associate Members, other organizations active in optics. The governing body is its "General Assembly", which is held usually every three years during an ICO Congress which includes an international conference on optics. In the time span going from one "General Assembly", to the next, a bureau is responsible for running the Commission. The Bureau consists of: President, Former-President, General Secretary, Associate Secretary, Treasurer, and 14 Vice-Presidents (eight elected) of whom at least two from industry. In order to serve and represent the international optics community, ICO maintains contacts with its Members and with optical scientists in all countries and welcomes all new contacts. Together with the other companies involved, it contributes to the coordination of international activities in optics and in particular the Congress on optical science. The nineteenth ICO Congress was held in Florence in 2002. In addition to its Congresses, ICO promotes specialist international meetings and acts as a co-sponsor for many international scientific meetings organized by other institutions.
