The Institute of Research on Combustion carries out research activities in priority areas for innovation of the country with application in many production sectors: energy, industrial engineering, safety, environment, new materials. The theoretical and experimental activities are aimed at the study of low-environmental combustion processes for the innovation of electrical and thermal energy production technologies, waste thermal technologies, biomass and alternative fuels. Within this framework, studies are also carried out on advanced techniques for characterising fossil fuels, combustible mixtures obtained from the treatment of fossil fuels and particulate and gaseous pollutants produced by combustion. Characterization also extends to the relevant parameters for industrial risks such as flammability and explosion limits of combustible materials. The general aim is to continuously update traditional combustion technologies with an eco-friendly view and to develop alternative and innovative technologies for the optimization of combustion processes both in terms of greater efficiency of the energy production process than in terms of reducing the environmental impact on emissions of air pollutants and green house gases.
