Muscle Cell News

The e-scientific newsletter Connexon Creative highlights as THIS WEEK'S TOP STORY the paper "Estrogens enhance myoblast differentiation in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy by antagonizing DUX4 activity", result of a research carried out in our Institute (https://www.musclecellnews.com/issue/).
Connexon Creative sifts through all of the most recent scientific literature and news, and selects the most relevant and highest impact publications on regenerative medicine.
This week, it highlights a study directed by researchers of the IBCN, in collaboration with University of la Côte d'Azur (UCA), Nice, Catholic University of Rome, University of Padua and the National Institute of Health, that has been recently published in the journal Journal of Clinical Investigation (https://www.jci.org/articles/view/89401).
This study demonstrates that estrogens can improve the differentiation of myoblasts from patients affected by facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Sex is one of the factors affecting sensitivity to the disease, with females being less severely affected than males and presenting a higher proportion of asymptomatic carriers. This work identifies estrogens as a potential disease modifier that underlie sex-related differences in FSHD and pave the way for studies aimed to confirm in vivo these results. A related project from the IBCN researchers has been recently granted by FSH Society (https://www.fshsociety.org/).
