The seventeenth edition of the Italian-Hungarian symposium on spectrochemistry will be held in Turin (Italy), 14-18 June, 2021 under the auspices of Italian and Hungarian prominent Institutions such as the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) of Budapest, National Research Council of Italy (CNR), the Turin and Pisa Universities in Italy, the Italian Society of Pharmaceutical Medicine (SIMeF), the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry - Italian Language Branch (SETAC ILB) and the Experimental Zooprofilactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta (IZSPLV).

In the framework of the bilateral governmental programme for scientific and technical cooperation between Italy and Hungary, this series of biennial events is a well-established tradition since 1983, providing a permanent forum for scientists primarily (but not only) from Italy and Hungary to discuss the outcomes of their studies in the fields of human health and environmental protection. The 2021 Symposium theme is “Current approaches in health and environmental protection” and will deal with the most recent advances in this field. The main focus will be the role played to this end by innovative analytical techniques, as in many instances analytical chemistry is closely related to the studies and research needs in environmental, pharmaceutical and medical fields. In particular, the following themes will be addressed:

-monitoring and reduction of contaminants in environmental compartments, at the workplace and in food;

- current developments in medical devices;

- new challenges in pharmacology;

- use, abuse and misuse of pharmaceuticals;

- regulatory aspects.

Scientists from various countries other than Italy and Hungary will also attend the Symposium to stimulate the mutual exchange of views and gain information on other possible approaches adopted to promote research, stimulate innovation and establish new analytical avenues in the fields of environmental sciences, toxicology and pharmacology.  The backbone of the Symposium will consist of more than 50 oral presentations. Poster presentations (more than 30 in total), in turn, will be displayed for the entire duration of the event.
Last, but not least, a number of oral presentations will be given by prominent scientists from countries other than Italy or Hungary so as to further stimulate the mutual exchange of views and gain information on other possible approaches adopted to promote research, stimulate innovation and establish new analytical strategies in the field of pharmacology.

Selected papers from the oral or poster presentations of this international Symposium that address the environmental aspects  of this theme will be published in the virtual Special Issue “Current approaches in environmental protection” that will be a “bridge” between the two Journals of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC; Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell):

- Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management (IEAM);

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (ET&C).
