Each of these subsystems has to interface not only between\nthemselves but also with the ITER auxiliary and control systems as well as with the\nplasma (in the case of the launcher). The definition and management of interfaces is\ntherefore essential for the system to guarantee the required performance, availability\nand reliability and proper description of each interface boundary is essential for\nassembly and operation of the entire system as a single unit. In addition, the present\nITER ECH system was essentially specified prior to 2000, since then progress has\nbeen made in the development of high power, long pulse systems and associated\ncomponents. The ultimate physics performance and operational reliability is limited\nby this older technology, which has not taken advantage of the knowledge and\nexperience gained in operating the multi-megawatt ECH systems on present tokamaks\nand stellarators.\nThe objective of this paper is to review the present ITER ECH system, which includes\nthe power supplies, gyrotrons, transmission lines and launchers. Then propose\nmodifications that are performance driven and engineered for reliability and\nmaintainability, while reducing the complexity and costs. Potential operating\nscenarios will be discussed that require an intelligent and automatic decision making\nprocess, for example directing the EC power to either of the two EC launchers based\non the immediate physics requirements.
