Small particles are\nassociated to fine dust formation in the atmosphere and to\npulmonary diseases. The legislation proposes a stronger\nrestriction in terms of particulate mass concentrations for\nboth Diesel and gasoline engines and a limitation on number\nconcentration. Unfortunately, the experimental evaluation of\nparticles number and size is a hard task as they are strongly\naffected by the dilution conditions, due to condensation and\nnucleation phenomena, which may occur during the\nsampling. Even if a considerable amount of basic research on\nparticulate matter emitted by engines has been carried out, the\nmechanisms governing particle formation are still not fully\nunderstood, neither for Diesel nor for gasoline engines.\nFurthermore, poor information is available on the effect of\nengine control parameters and of the emissions control\ntechnologies on particles size and number.\nThe aim of the paper is the experimental characterization in\nterms of number and size of particles emitted from a gasoline\nengine in steady state operating conditions. The gasoline\nparticles investigation was carried out at the exhaust of a 1.2\nliters port fuel injection spark ignition engine. The engine test\nbench was equipped with a full-pass engine control system\ndSPACE MicroAutoBox and a Scanning Mobility Particle\nSizer (SMPS) for particles counting and sizing, thus allowing\naccomplishing a detailed analysis on the effects of the engine\ncontrol variables on particles emission." ; prodottidellaricerca:prodottoDi modulo:ID5407 , istituto:CDS058 ; pubblicazioni:autoreCNR unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA11450 .
