Our observations \nwere performed with the TNG and\nthe VLT-UT3 (Melipal) during the first and \nfourth night after the\ngamma-ray burst discovery. We find robust \nevidence for temporal evolution\nof the polarization, which is therefore, at \nleast partially, intrinsic to\nthe optical transient. We do not find \nconvincing evidence of wavelength\ndependence for the intrinsic polarization \nof the transient, in agreement\nwith current polarization models for \noptical afterglows. We discuss the\nrole of dust, both in our galaxy and in the \nhost, in modifying the\ntransmitted polarization vector, showing \nhow a sizable fraction of the\nobserved polarized flux is due to Galactic \nselective extinction, while it\nis not possible to single out any clear \ncontribution from dust in the host\ngalaxy. We discuss how our data compare to \nthose obtained by different\ngroups showing that a two-component model \nis required to describe the\ncomplete dataset. This is not surprising \ngiven the complex lightcurve of\nGRB 021004." . @prefix istituto: . prodotto:ID5712 prodottidellaricerca:prodottoDi istituto:CDS005 ; pubblicazioni:autoreCNR unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA5840 . istituto:CDS005 prodottidellaricerca:prodotto prodotto:ID5712 .
