In\nagricultural fields, CH4 is usually measured with the closed\nchamber technique, resulting in discontinuous series of measurements\nperformed over a limited area, that generally do\nnot provide sufficient information on the short-term variation\nof the fluxes. On the contrary, aerodynamic techniques have\nbeen rarely applied for the measurement of CH4 fluxes in\nrice paddy fields. The eddy covariance (EC) technique provides\nintegrated continuous measurements over a large area\nand may increase our understanding of the underlying processes\nand diurnal and seasonal pattern of CH4 emissions in\nthis ecosystem.\nFor this purpose a Fast Methane Analyzer (Los Gatos Research\nLtd.) was installed in a rice paddy field in the Po Valley\n(Northern Italy). Methane fluxes were measured during\nthe rice growing season with both EC and manually operated\nclosed chambers. Methane fluxes were strongly influenced\nby the height of the water table, with emissions peaking\nwhen it was above 10-12 cm. Soil temperature and the\ndevelopmental stage of rice plants were also responsible of\nthe seasonal variation on the fluxes. The measured EC fluxes\nshowed a diurnal cycle in the emissions, which was more\nrelevant during the vegetative period, and with CH4 emissions\nbeing higher in the late evening, possibly associated\nwith higher water temperature.
