They are naturally present in tar, bitumen and oil, and can be originated by combustion of forests. Furthermore, certain compounds such as perylene and retene are thought to be produced diagenetically. Anthropogenic sources include combustion of fossil fuels, carbon black, coal tar pitch, petrochemical industry, waste incineration and production of coke, carbon black, coal tar pitch, asphalt and petroleum cracking. Spillage of fossil fuels is another common anthropogenic source of PAHs. The purpose of this study was to determine distribution, degree of contamination, sources and potential toxicological significance of PAHs in surficial sediments along the coast of the Ligurian Sea. The relative abundance of PAH congeners varies widely in the area, but the pattern is dominated by relatively high molecular weight compounds with three rings or more, which indicates that high temperature combustion processes were the predominant source. The ratios among significant congeners suggests deviations that can be attributable to influences from petrogenic sources, selective transport processes and post depositional degradation."^^xsd:string ; skos:note "ISI Web of Science (WOS)"^^xsd:string ; pubblicazioni:affiliazioni "1 - ARPAL, 2 - CNR\n"^^xsd:string ; pubblicazioni:titolo "Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surficial coastal sediments of the Ligurian Sea"^^xsd:string ; prodottidellaricerca:abstract "Surface sediment was collected from 75 sites all along the coast of the Ligurian Sea and analysed for the 14 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) listed as priority pollutants by the US EPA plus 2 alkilated congeners. Total PAH concentrations varied widely, from lower than detection limits to 26247 \u00ECg kg-1. Maximum values correspond to the transects of Genova Punta Vagno, Finale Ligure, Genova Polcevera, in the order. The spatial distribution of PAHs suggested that they derive predominantly from urban and industrial wastes and that discrete point sources are responsible for the highest contamination. The relative abundance of individual PAH compounds suggests that high temperature combustion processes are the predominant source of PAH contamination, even though at some sites the presence of a petrogenic component is significant. The distribution appears sometimes dependent on sediment characteristics, but not on a general scale. Comparison with numerical effects-based sediment quality guidelines indicate that most of the sites have levels of PAH which are predicted not to be harmful. Acute biological effects may occur only in one case, where ERM guidelines are exceeded." ; prodottidellaricerca:prodottoDi istituto:CDS080 ; pubblicazioni:autoreCNR unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA5817 , unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA6363 . @prefix parolechiave: . prodotto:ID48836 parolechiave:insiemeDiParoleChiave . ns10:ID304692 pubblicazioni:rivistaDi prodotto:ID48836 . parolechiave:insiemeDiParoleChiaveDi prodotto:ID48836 .
