Ab initio electron correlated results for atoms and linear molecules."^^xsd:string ; prodottidellaricerca:abstract "The results of an ab initio investigation of the Jones\nbirefringence (JB) of noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr) and of a few\nlinear molecules -- both centrosymmetric (H$_2$, N$_2$,\nC$_2$H$_2$) and dipolar (CO) -- carried out employing Coupled\nCluster response techniques and rather extended correlation\nconsistent basis sets are presented. The relationships existing\nbetween the appropriate linear, quadratic and cubic frequency\ndependent response functions and the tensors introduced in the\ntheoretical derivation of the anisotropy by Graham and Raab in\n1983 [ Proc. R. Soc. Lon. A, {\\bf{390}}, 73, (1983)] are\nintroduced. The magnitude of the effect is determined and\ncomparison is made with that of the Cotton---Mouton effect (CME),\nwhich, together with the Kerr effect, is closely related to Jones\nbirefringence and superimposed to it in actual measurements, and\nof electric field gradient induced birefringence (EFGB). CME\nyields anisotropies of the refractive index $\\approx0 to\n$\\approx00 larger than those predicted for JB in the eight\nsystems studied, whereas EFGB and JB are shown to be of comparable\nstrength." ; prodottidellaricerca:prodottoDi istituto:CDS063 ; pubblicazioni:autoreCNR unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA18224 , unitaDiPersonaleEsterno:ID12335 .
