The \nfirst step of surface modification, performed by a hydrogen and methane \nfluxing mixture activated by a hot tantalum filament, led to titanium \nsheets that were completely amphiphilic. Then wettability properties \nevolved toward different behaviors according to the post-treatment: no \ndifference was observed if samples were put in an inert atmosphere such as \nN-2 or a vacuum, while a high hydrophobicity was developed if samples were \nexposed to air. Hydrophilicity and oleophilicity properties have been \ndetermined by water and alpha-bromonaphthalene contact angle measurements, \nrespectively. Modifications induced have been characterized by X-ray \nphotoelectron spectroscopy and have shown that our treatment induces a \ncarburization of the titanium surface. Moreover, we found that the \nhydrophobic character, developed only in the presence of oxygen, is due to \na partial reoxidation of the surface, which probably makes the surface \nless polar with respect to the untreated surface." ; prodottidellaricerca:prodottoDi istituto:CDS054 ; pubblicazioni:autoreCNR unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA790 , unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA1871 , unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA1496 . ns10:ID464319 pubblicazioni:rivistaDi prodotto:ID33660 .
