A recently developed \nbiophysical model for plant growth in saline environments confirms a \ncritical role for root morphology and hydraulic properties in salinity \nand soil water deficit tolerance. The identification of genes based on \ncorrelations between exposure to salt stress and gene expression in \nroots and other organs has to date proved to be only marginally \nsuccessful as a strategy for improving plant salt tolerance. Recently, \nthe identification of genes that function in stress tolerance has \nadvanced considerably by using genetic mutation analysis. However, \nthe power of a genetic approach to understanding the specific \nmechanisms of root adaptation to saline and osmotic stress \nenvironments has not been fully exploited. A review of the available, \nyet still incomplete, collection of root mutants in Arabidopsis and \nother species demonstrates the potential usefulness of such \nmutants as tools in the genetic dissection of root function under \nosmotic stress. Identification of genes responsible for changes in \nroot morphology that might also be advantageous in the presence of \nsalt stress may open new avenues towards the elucidation of critical \nmechanisms for plant salt tolerance.\n" ; prodottidellaricerca:prodottoDi istituto:CDS041 ; pubblicazioni:autoreCNR unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA9214 . @prefix parolechiave: . prodotto:ID27926 parolechiave:insiemeDiParoleChiave . ns10:ID341394 pubblicazioni:rivistaDi prodotto:ID27926 . parolechiave:insiemeDiParoleChiaveDi prodotto:ID27926 .
