Despite\nintensive investigation, 10-40% of patients with polyneuropathy\nreferred to specialist centres, lack a causative diagnosis. We\nprospectively examined whether vascular factors are related to an\nincreased incidence of Chronic Idiopathic Distal Symmetric Neuropathy\n(CI-DSN).\nMethods: The study population comprised 5,632 individuals of the\nILSA. Potential effect of vascular factors was estimated by regressing\nCI-DSN on the occurrence of several vascular factors in a subcohort\nof 2,512 non-diabetic individuals.Multivariate relative risks\nof CI-DSN were estimated by Cox proportional hazards model.\nRESULTS. After 3.8 years of follow-up, we documented 51 incident\nCI-DSN cases. At univariate analyses, age, comorbidity, waist\ncircumference, leg length, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and\ncoronary hearth disease proved to significantly increased the risk\nof developing CI-DSN. Entering these significant covariates into a\nCox regression model, only age (RR=1.08; 95%CI, 1.02 to 1.14),\nleg length (RR=1.05; 95%CI, 1.01 to 1.1), and PAD (RR=2.75;\n95%CI, 1.15 to 6.56) proved significant predictors of CI-DSN.\nConclusions: The presence at baseline of PAD is associated with a\ntwo-fold increase in the risk of developing CI-DSN. Our data from\na population-based perspective strongly support the evidence that\nthe incidence of polyneuropathy in non-diabetic individuals is\nassociated with potentially modifiable vascular factors"@en ; prodottidellaricerca:prodottoDi istituto:CDS061 , modulo:ID6440 ; pubblicazioni:autoreCNR unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA28259 , unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA538 . @prefix parolechiave: . prodotto:ID180539 parolechiave:insiemeDiParoleChiave . ns11:ID232651 pubblicazioni:rivistaDi prodotto:ID180539 . parolechiave:insiemeDiParoleChiaveDi prodotto:ID180539 .
