Forty different stimuli were \npresented randomly 1600 times in foveal vision; twenty of them produced \nthe perception of illusory contours of a Kanizsa square, the remaining \nwere obtained rotating outwards the inducers and they did not produce any \nillusory percept. Half of them had white inducers on a black background \nand vice versa; half of them were symmetrical and the other half \nasymmetrical. In lateral occipital areas illusory percepts produced larger \nevoked responses starting as early as 145 ms post-stimulus with the N1 \npeak. ERP data did not provide evidence of right-sided lateralisation of \nthe processes underlying illusory contours formation at sensory level, as \nsuggested by some neuroimaging and neuropsychological studies. The two \ncerebral hemispheres were differently activated while the subjective \npatterns formation progressed through neural processing stages. Indeed, \nbrain response to illusory contours was more pronounced in the left \noccipital area at N2 component level (about 250 ms post-stimulus) and at \nright parietal sites at the latency of P300 component. Both background \nluminance and stimulus symmetry interacted with illusory boundaries \nformation. Present results confirm the hypothesis that the integration of \ncontours arises at early stages of visual processing and highlight the \nprimary role of edges continuity and boundary alignment in illusory \ncontours perception."@en ; prodottidellaricerca:prodottoDi istituto:CDS009 ; pubblicazioni:autoreCNR unitaDiPersonaleInterno:MATRICOLA26192 . @prefix parolechiave: . prodotto:ID10032 parolechiave:insiemeDiParoleChiave . ns10:ID395734 pubblicazioni:rivistaDi prodotto:ID10032 . parolechiave:insiemeDiParoleChiaveDi prodotto:ID10032 .
